I can’t believe I finally get to tell you that I am the designer of the Official 2020 Scheepjes CAL – d’Histoire Naturelle, which I have designed in the same format as my popular Read With Me CALs! I have teamed up with Scheepjes to bring to you my biggest CAL design yet which has been more than three years in the making from idea to blanket!

Ik kan haast niet geloven dat ik je eindelijk kan vertellen dat ik de ontwerper ben van de officiële 2020 Scheepjes CAL – d’Histoire Naturelle. Ontworpen in hetzelfde format als mijn populaire Read With Me CALs! Ik heb in samenwerking met Scheepjes heel hard gewerkt om mijn grootste CAL tot nu toe te kunnen houden, die meer dan drie jaar in de maak is geweest van idee tot deken!

How it began / Hoe het begon

It all began when I read All the light we cannot see* by Antony Doerr in 2016. A mind-blowing story that fits together like a puzzle box. We follow Marie Laure and her father who works as a locksmith at the National Natural History Museum in Paris. In contrast, we also follow Werner, a German boy who loves math and radio’s and is trained to be a soldier for World War II.
I was just in awe of the prose. How he described the creaking of floorboards, the dazzling light upon crystals and gemstones, the smell of the museum gardens and greenhouses. I just knew when I read it that I needed to do something with it. Only there were so many ideas and stories in the book, that I struggled to pour it all into one design.

Het begon allemaal toen ik in 2016 voor het eerst Als je het licht niet kunt zien* las van Anthony Doerr. Een adembenemend verhaal die in elkaar grijpt als een puzzeldoos. We volgen Marie Laure en haar vader, die werkt als slotenmaker in het National Natural History Museum te Parijs. Daartegenover volgen we Werner, een Duitse jongen met een voorliefde voor wiskunde en radio’s die wordt opgeleid tot soldaat voor de tweede wereldoorlog.
Ik was zo onder de indruk van de beschrijvende taal. Hoe hij krakende vloeren beschreef, of het duizelingwekkende licht van kristallen en edelstenen, de geuren van de museum tuinen en kassen. Ik wist gewoon dat ik er iets mee moest doen. Alleen waren er zoveel verhalen en ideeën dat ik niet goed wist hoe ik dat allemaal in één ontwerp kon gieten.

I decided to make a whole collection based on books, which I called the Read With Me Collection. The first design I made for this collection was the Hotel of Bees shawl, inspired by the Hotel of Bees in the book. And I added even more patterns through the years.

Ik besloot dat ik een hele collectie gebaseerd op boeken wilde maken, die ik de Read with Me Collection noemde. Het eerste ontwerp voor deze collectie was de Hotel of Bees shawl, geïnspireerd op de Hotel of Bees in het boek. En ik heb over de jaren heen steeds meer patronen toegevoegd.

From pillow to blanket / Van kussen naar deken
After that first shawl I wanted to dive straight in and design something based on the National Natural History museum in Paris from the book. I thought a pillow would be large enough to capture the museum, but boy was I wrong. After a few weeks of trying, I gave up and decided a blanket would be more fitting to show off all the gorgeous museum parts. I had never designed anything this large before with so many different shapes and stitches and it took a lot of trial and error to get the design to work as a full blanket.

Na die eerste shawl wilde ik gelijk door met een ontwerp gebaseerd op de National Natural History Museum in Parijs van het boek. Ik dacht dat een kussen wel groot genoeg zou zijn om het museum in te vangen, maar dat wilde dus echt niet. Na een paar weken proberen gaf ik het op en bedacht dat een deken veel beter zou zijn om alle mooie delen van het museum te laten zien. Ik heb nog nooit zoiets groots en ingewikkelds ontworpen, met zoveel vormen en steken. Het heeft behoorlijk wat proberen en uithalen gekost om het tot een hele deken te krijgen.

Working together with Scheepjes / Samenwerken met Scheepjes
In 2018 I joined the Scheepjes blogger family and together with Scheepjes we decided that this blanket would be even more awesome as a CAL. So I started working on a second version, making it even better and more versatile, which has led to the blanket you see today : )

In 2018 kwam ik bij de Scheepjes blogger familie en samen met Scheepjes hebben we besloten dat deze deken nog veel beter tot zijn recht zou komen als CAL. Dus ik ben druk bezig gegaan met een tweede versie, waarbij hij nog mooier en afwisselender is geworden. En dat is dus de deken zoals je hem nu ziet : )

CAL & Read-along / CAL en boekenclub
This CAL won’t be like any other CAL. It will also be a read-along! : D
As the pattern is inspired by the book All the light we cannot see* by Anthony Doerr, Scheepjes and I invite you to join the read along. We will discuss designated sections of the book each Sunday in the Scheepjes Facebook group and I have made a weekly reading schedule to avoid spoilers during these discussions (see main CAL page for more info). As a very special bonus, I got to interview the author, so each Sunday I will also release a section of the interview!
Of course reading along is not mandatory, but it will add an extra dimension to your CAL experience : ) Instead of reading, you can also listen along with an audio book during your crochet, and immerse yourself fully into the story <3

Deze CAL is niet zoals elke andere CAL. We zullen namelijk ook samen het boek lezen! : D
Omdat het patroon geïnspireerd is door het boek Als je het licht niet kunt zien* van Anthony Doerr, nodig ik je uit om mee te lezen. We zullen elke zondag het boek bespreken in de Scheepjes Facebook groep en daarom heb ik een wekelijkse leesplanning gemaakt om spoilers te voorkomen (zie meer info op de Hoofdpagina van de CAL). Als heel speciale bonus mocht ik de schrijver interviewen (in het Engels), en elke zondag laat ik daar een stukje van zien!
Natuurlijk is meelezen niet verplicht tijdens de CAL, maar het zorgt wel voor een extra dimensie in je CAL ervaring : ) In plaats van lezen kun je er ook voor kiezen om mee te luisteren via een audioboek tijdens het haken en op die manier jezelf volledig onder te dompelen in het verhaal <3

A journey through the museum / Een reis door het museum

This blanket is designed to take you through all the big gardens and galleries of the National Natural History museum in Paris. The blanket is inspired by the book as well as the actual museum.
We’ll start at the Jardin des Plantes, the museum gardens where all the galleries are situated. We’ll visit the Galerie d’Entomologie where you will find drawers full of insects such as bees and butterflies. Our next stop is the Galerie de Botanique, packed with amazing live plant species and scientific drawings of flowers and herbs. After that we’ll continue to the Galerie de Mineralogie where you won’t believe your eyes while looking at the cabinets full of dazzling diamonds and crystals. Then we’ll visit the show stopping Grande Galerie de l’Evolution, containing its amazing procession of preserved mammals, such as giraffes, elephants and rhino’s. Lastly we will wind down in search of a little quiet at the Galerie de Paleontologie where the skeletons of animals of a bygone era are kept, as well as other fossils and shells. Sounds good? : )

Deze deken is ontworpen om je mee te nemen door alle grote tuinen en galerijen van het National Natural History Museum te Parijs. De deken is geïnspireerd op het boek, maar ook op het echte museum.
We starten in de Jardin des Plantes, de museumtuin, waar alle galerijen staan. We bezoeken de Galerie d’Entomologie waar je lades vol insecten vindt, zoals bijen en vlinders. Daarna gaan we naar de Galerie de Botanique, waar je geweldige levende plantensoorten vindt, maar ook prachtige wetenschappelijke tekeningen van bloemen en kruiden. We gaan door naar de Galerie de Mineralogie waar je haast je ogen niet gelooft als je de duizelingwekkende diamanten en kristallen ziet. Als we daarvan zijn bijgekomen gaan we door naar de Grande Galerie de l’Evolution met een grote processie van opgezette zoogdieren, zoals giraffen, olifanten en neushoorns. Als laatste zoeken we naar een beetje rust in de Galerie de Paleontologie waar de skeletten van dieren van vergane tijden staan, maar ook fossielen en schelpen. Klinkt goed? : )

Yarn colorways / Garen kleurcombinaties

Along with the blanket design, the colorways are also inspired by the museum theme: Herbarium, Mineralogy, Conchology and Entomology. You will find the colors further down this post.

Naast het ontwerp van de deken zijn de kleurcombinaties ook geïnspireerd door het museum thema: Herbarium, Mineralogie, Conchologie en Entomologie. Je vindt de kleuren even verderop in deze blogpost.

Yarn & blanket size/ Garen & afmeting van de deken
The pattern is designed to be made with Scheepjes Colour Crafter or Scheepjes Stone Washed/River Washed yarns. Colour Crafter is a 100% premium acrylic yarn, which is anti-pilling, so your blanket should stay gorgeous from the moment you finish and for long after. With Colour Crafter, your blanket should be approximately 145-150cm (58-60″) square after blocking.
Het patroon is ontworpen om gemaakt te worden met Scheepjes Colour Crafter of Scheepjes Stone Washed/River Washed. Colour Crafter is een 100% premium acryl die niet pilt, dus je deken zou mooi moeten blijven vanaf het moment tot je hem af hebt tot ver daarvoorbij. Met Colour Crafter wordt je deken ongeveer 145-150cm na blocken.

Stone Washed and River Washed are both yarns with a cotton core surrounded by an acrylic ‘fluff’. This gives a stunning color dimension to the yarn and super crisp stitch definition. With Stone Washed/River Washed, your blanket should be approximately 140-145cm (56-58″) square after blocking.
Stone Washed en River Washed zijn beide garens met een katoenen kern en een acryl ‘fluff’ eromheen. Dit geeft het garen een prachtige kleurdiepte en super mooie stekendefinitie. Met Stone Washed/River Washed wordt je deken ongeveer 140-145cm na blocken.

CAL start

The CAL officially starts on Wednesday the 23rd of September. A week before, on September 16th, the Tips&Tricks file will be released in the Official Facebook groups and on Scheepjes.com for the early birds that would like to practice some of the stitches and/or make a swatch : ) You can find the complete CAL schedule here. I am really excited to start and I hope to meet you in the Scheepjes Facebook group where the CAL is being held and you can share with the community, ask all of your questions and receive support from myself and mod and admins during the CAL!
