Inspiration is a magical thing, don’t you think? A little seed can turn into a whole tree with a solid trunk and firm branches reaching for the sky and roots firmly in the soil. Sometimes the tree takes years to grow. The tightly packed seed waiting patiently for a soft, wet tissue to spread itself out on. Other times it shoots out of the earth in a hurry, mowing all other plants and saplings aside.
Here’s what’s even more magical… It seems to come out of nowhere, but this is just a disguise. If you pay attention, anything can serve as inspiration: the pungent scent that wafts over you when you brush your hand over geraniums; thousands of bees buzzing overhead, snacking on the abundantly flowering bunches of the linden tree; clouds as big as ships you want to throw a ladder at and climb onto; the way a tree stump tells about its past with the rise and falls of hard winters and soft springs encased in its ridges.
Anything can be inspiration. And the more I live life with my eyes and ears and all of my senses open, the easier it becomes to see inspiration all around me. The soapy suds of life seep into the cracks of my work and it is one of the things I love most about creative work.
One of my main sources of inspiration, other than life itself, are books! I love to read and devour as many books as I can. There’s something special about spending days or even weeks with a story, getting to know the characters and their worries and exhillerations.
I already have many crochet designs inspired by books: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr inspired multiple crochet projects, such as three of my bestsellers, the Hotel of Bees shawl, the D’Histoire Naturelle blanket and The Entomologist; Annie Proulx’s epic Barkskins inspired the History of Trees shawl and the Dark Forest shawl; Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia inspired a shawl of the same name; the list goes on and on.
When I read Migrations, a debut novel by Charlotte McConaghy, I knew I had to do something with it. It’s vivid prose transported me on that vessel through the icy cold seas towards Antarctica, following what could well be the last migration of the Arctic Terns. Following a woman who rather steps onto a treacherous journey to flee her reality than to stay home. That’s the magic of storytelling; being transported to another world, all from the comfort of my own toasty warm home.
I too love to tell stories with my designs so that you can immerse yourself fully into the stitches and it becomes more than just another crochet project. My latest release, the Migrations shawl, does just that.
