About the CAL / Over de CAL

Contents/Inhoud

During the Read With Me CAL we will crochet the History of Bees shawl. But it also focusses on the bee theme, where I will post weekly bee facts and curiosities. And there is also room to read and discuss the book ‘The History of bees’ by Maja Lunde.

Gedurende de Read With Me CAL haken we de History of Bees shawl.

The CAL will run for seven weeks from the first swatch to showing off your shawls. See the CAL planning below for the release dates.

De CAL wordt gehost in mijn Facebook groep: A Spoonful of Yarnies.

About the book / Over het boek

We will read ‘The History of bees’ by Maja Lunde. The book contains the stories of Tao, William and George and each have a relation to bees. The time periods also vary. The shawl is inspired by their stories and we will crochet our way from Tao’s story as a polinator, to George’s story as a beekeeper to Williams story as a hive designer. You can buy the book here*. Every Sunday during the CAL we will have ‘Bookclub Sunday’, where we can discuss our favorite quotes from that weeks reading section. Reading along is not mandatory for the CAL of course, but does make it all the more fun!

About the Pattern / Over het Patroon

Dimensions / Afmetingen

160cm/64” wingspan and 75cm/30” deep after blocking.

160cm wijd en 75cm diep na blocken.

Difficulty & Techniques/moeilijkheidsgraad & technieken

Definitely an intermediate pattern due to the puff stitches, front- and backpost dc and tr (US) and working with two colors in the same row. But hopefully it is also good to follow for an advanced beginner with the pictures and charts. And because it’s a CAL you will have the help of many others : )

Pattern format / Patroon stijl

Written pattern with pictures and charts in English (US) and Dutch.

Hooksize / Haaknaald

The used hooksize is 3.5mm(E), but it is recommended that you make a swatch to make sure that your shawl will end up the same size and that you will not need more or less yarn than the pattern calls for.

Yarn / Garen

The shawl uses two colors of Scheepjes Metropolis*. This is a beautiful fingering weight wool yarn (75% merino/25% nylon; 200m/50g). I have picked a few different colorways inspired by bees <3 And even better, I am working together with a few different online yarn stores to put together yarn packs, so you can order yours with just one click : )
Please note that the yarn packs only contain the yarn! NO hooks, books or patterns are included.

  • Beautiful pattern. Beautiful yarn colorways you’ve shown here. I’ll use your affiliate here in Canada. So excited. Hugs.

  • Is Facebook the only venue? I would love to participate however I do not use Facebook.

    Beautiful pattern and colourways!

    • Hi Carol, you can still purchase the pattern and receive the files, but if you want to discuss the book or get pattern help in a CAL setting, Facebook will be the only place to do that. Of course, if you need help with the pattern, you can always email me: aspoonfulofyarn@hotmail.com

  • will there be tutorials as I cannot read a pattern without help but I would so love to do this cal I just love the shawl and the colours, I am a beginner/intermediate

    • Hi Ann, thank you for your kind words. There will be pictures and charts to guide you, but not for each row, so unfortunately you will need to be able to read a pattern.

  • Any US vendors/sellers for the yarn? Looks like the links are for overseas only and the shipping won’t be worth it. Would love to do this in the recommended yarn or guess will have to research comparable yarn.

    • Hi Michelle, unfortunately I could not find US sellers that sell Metropolis yarn. However, I have heard that shipping from the UK to US can be reasonable through wool warehouse or Deramores. So it might be worth checking out.
