The Hotel of Bees shawl turns 10 this June!
Hello crochet friends,
It has been a long time since you’ve heard from me and with good reason. Due to burnout I had to take a major step back from creating and being online, full stop. I am slowly finding my ground again and re-imagining what it means for me to show up and create. I had to stop crocheting as well, due to renewed pain issues. I still have some gorgeous projects I hope will see their finished form someday. But I don’t know when that will be.
As it turns out I am still a creative and I need to pour that creative energy into something. Whether that’s crochet or something else.
I have always struggled to cram my words into short social media posts and ever since discovering Substack, I have gently transitioned towards long-form writing. Creating one essay a month (- roughly and capacity permitting) there. You can find and follow me there if you want, as I share my thoughts on being a mom, re-creating a slow life after burnout, creative work, (human) nature and more. I guess if I had to sum it all up, it comes down to what it means to be vulnerably human.
Now, if you remember this post I shared that I had big plans. Not all were realistic at my current capacity, BUT one of them is finally coming together with much effort, patience and enthusiasm from a friend!
Before I can share more, let’s go back to roughly ten years ago….

Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat jullie iets van me gehoord hebben, en met goede reden. Door een burn-out moest ik een flinke stap terugzetten van het creatief maken en online zijn. Ik vind langzaam mijn draai weer en ben nu aan het bekijken wat het voor mij betekent om online aanwezig te zijn en te creëren. Ik moest ook stoppen met haken vanwege terugkerende pijnklachten. Ik heb nog steeds een paar prachtige projecten liggen die hopelijk ooit afgemaakt zullen worden. Maar ik weet niet wanneer dat zal zijn.
Het blijkt dat ik nog steeds creatief ben en dat ik die creatieve energie ergens in kwijt moet. Of dat nu haken is of iets anders.
Ik heb altijd moeite gehad om mijn woorden in korte berichten op sociale media te proppen, en sinds ik Substack heb ontdekt, ben ik langzaam overgestapt op langere teksten. Ik schrijf daar ongeveer één essay per maand (afhankelijk van wat me lukt en in het engels). Je kunt me daar vinden en volgen als je wilt. Ik deel er mijn gedachten over het moederschap, het hervinden van een nieuw en rustiger leven na burn-out, creatief werk, (de menselijke) natuur en meer. Ik denk dat het, als ik het samenvat, neerkomt op wat het betekent om kwetsbaar en menselijk te zijn.
Als je je mijn vorige bericht herinnert, vertelde ik dat ik grote plannen had. Niet alles was realistisch gezien mijn huidige capaciteit, MAAR één ervan wordt eindelijk werkelijkheid dankzij de inspanning, het geduld en enthousiasme van een haakvriend!
Voordat ik meer kan vertellen, laten we even teruggaan naar ongeveer tien jaar geleden…
The book that changed my crochet design career
“Not so long ago, the Hotel of Bees was a cheerful address…” So began the description of one of my favorite and most inspiring fictional locations in a book I had ever read in Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. As I later found out, to my disappointment, there isn’t a real Hotel of Bees in Saint-Malo (or anywhere else in the world for that matter). But still, the author’s wonderfully descriptive prose made it as vivid in my mind’s eye as if it were a real hotel I could find on Booking.com.
When I read that section I felt a surge of inspiration that electrified my core. I asked myself a question that would change the trajectory of my crochet design career (which was no career at all, just me and a little blog where I posted free patterns and shared the occasional sewing, crocheting or knitting make.)
I even remember where I was sitting in the house when multiple answers to this question popped up and I scribbled pages and pages full of new crochet design ideas.
The question was this: What would the Hotel of Bees look like if I translated it into a crocheted shawl?
The result was something I truly never imagined I had in me. I was proud of what I had made, but also still insecure about my pattern making abilities. I remember that I took the finished sample to a befriended yarn store owner and showed her the shawl. “I am going to post the pattern for free.” I said.
Her response?
“No you won’t!”
Sometimes we need someone who believes in us and our worth before we ourselves do and I am forever grateful that she filled that role. Because what happened after I posted the pattern, almost ten years ago, was something I would never have thought possible.
The pattern blew up! Where I thought to maybe sell 10-50 copies max, I sold 50 in the first 24 hours. But it didn’t stop there! CALs were a major thing back then and every other Facebook group asked me to host a CAL with it. The pattern spread like wildfire and now, almost ten years later, the count tallies up to almost 10,000 copies!
It put me on the map as a crochet designer and opened doors to collaborations with big yarn brands, such as Scheepjes, which perpetuated my crochet design career even more.
“Nog niet zo lang geleden was het bijenhotel een vrolijk onderkomen…” Zo begon de beschrijving van een van mijn favoriete en meest inspirerende fictieve locaties in een boek dat ik ooit las: Als je het licht niet kunt zien van Anthony Doerr. Tot mijn teleurstelling ontdekte ik later dat er geen echt bijenhotel in Saint-Malo bestaat (of waar dan ook ter wereld). Maar toch maakte de prachtig beschrijvende stijl van de auteur het zo levendig, alsof het een echt hotel was dat ik op Booking.com kon vinden.
Toen ik dat gedeelte las, voelde ik een golf van inspiratie die me raakte tot in mijn ziel. Ik stelde mezelf een vraag die mijn carrière als haakontwerpster zou bepalen (wat eigenlijk geen carrière was, gewoon ik en een kleine blog waar ik gratis patronen plaatste en af en toe een naaiproject, haak- of breiwerk deelde).
Ik weet zelfs nog waar ik in huis zat toen er meerdere antwoorden op die vraag in me opkwamen en ik pagina’s vol nieuwe haakideeën schetste.
De vraag was: hoe zou het bijenhotel eruitzien als ik het zou vertalen naar een gehaakte shawl?
Het resultaat was iets wat ik me echt nooit had kunnen voorstellen. Ik was trots op wat ik had gemaakt, maar tegelijkertijd ook onzeker over mijn vaardigheden als patroonschrijver. Ik herinner me dat ik de shawl meenam naar een bevriende eigenaresse van een wolwinkel en haar de shawl liet zien. “Ik ga het patroon gratis online zetten,” zei ik.
Haar reactie?
“Nee, dat doe je niet!”
Soms hebben we iemand nodig die in ons en onze waarde gelooft voordat we dat zelf kunnen doen, en ik ben haar eeuwig dankbaar dat zij die rol vervulde. Want wat er gebeurde nadat ik het patroon bijna tien jaar geleden online had gezet, had ik nooit voor mogelijk gehouden.
Het patroon werd een enorme hit! Waar ik dacht dat ik er maximaal 10 tot 50 zou verkopen, verkocht ik er 50 in de eerste 24 uur. Maar daar bleef het niet bij! CAL’s waren toen erg populair en elke andere Facebookgroep vroeg me om er een te organiseren. Het patroon verspreidde zich razendsnel en nu, bijna tien jaar later, zijn er al bijna 10.000 exemplaren van verkocht!
Het zette me op de kaart als haakontwerper en opende deuren naar samenwerkingen met grote garenmerken, zoals Scheepjes, wat mijn carrière als haakontwerper nog verder heeft laten groeien.

To celebrate I have teamed up with Christina Burns from Crafted by Chrissie. She has created the videos for The Overstory as well and now patiently (I mean, I could have never made these myself!) and very enthusiastically created step-by-step videos for the Hotel of Bees shawl you can crochet along to! So even if you just picked up a crochet hook, you can create this wonderful shawl.
