Welcome to the next part of the ‘Inspirational Hexies’ blog serie! If you missed last weeks post, you can find it here. In this weeks post we are going to dive deeper into the ocean and I cannot be more excited, because I am not the only one that’s inspired by the sea. So I will show you a lot of ocean inspired work and my second hexie!

Other Inspiration / Andere Inspiratie

There are so many inspiring things to find, but I have tried my best to pick my favorites. First off is the amazing artwork of Chris Berens. He’s a Dutch artist and he uses an unusual technique to create his work, which looks like it’s made digitally, but the stunning fact is that it’s not! He uses layers upon layers of see through foil, which he paints with colored ink and this gives a dreamlike and surrealistic effect. There’s just nothing like his art and I can look at his mesmerizing work for hours. There’s also a documentary about his work, called ‘Master of his magical universe’ which you can find here.

How To Catch a Tidal Wave

Title/titel: How to catch a tidal wave

Find his website with all of his work here.

Talking about artists: how about the crew that made Blue planet II! I saw the documentary last year and I was constantly oo-ing and ah-ing. Sometimes I could not believe what I saw and thought it was fake, but no, it’s all real! I cannot recommend this series enough, because I’m sure that if you did not already loved the ocean, you will after you’ve seen the series! And to ice the cake; the score is made by Hans Zimmer and it’s narated by David Attenborough <3

Another thing I wanted to show you is this book by Anthony Doerr, called the Shell Collector. It’s a short story collection, but the title story was the inspiration for my Shell Collector shawl and it’s a very inspiring story and a very good collection.

When there are people making documentaries or writing books, or creating artwork, there are also musicians to use the ocean as their inspiration. So I have created a little playlist for you to listen to while making your Hexie. You can find the link to the Spotify list here, and the youtube list here (unfortunately not complete), but you can also search for the music yourself and use another service with the list I have given below.

  1. Todd Baker – Gamelan Rain Melody
  2. Dan Romer – The Hardest Dive (from the documentary Chasing Coral)
  3. Todd Baker – Mother and Child
  4. Johan Soderqvist, Patrik Andren, Hans Ek – Thor and Liv (from Kon Tiki)
  5. Coldplay – Oceans
  6. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – A Minute to Breathe (from the documentary before the flood)
  7. Dan Romer – Anatomy of a Coral (from the documentary Chasing Coral)
  8. Todd Baker – Interwoven Stories
  9. Todd Baker – Under Stars
  10. Elbow – The River

The Hexie

For the second hexie of this theme I have used coral for my color inspiration. The colors of coral are just amazing and I had to use it for my second hexie. For the yarn I used 8 colors Scheepjes Stone Washed and River Washed from the Colour Pack*. The colorlist can be found below.

*The codes that start with an 8 are Stone Washed colors, the codes that start with a 9 are River Washed colors.

Which colors do you see when you think of the ocean? Like you have seen, the ocean is a vast place and inspiration is everywhere so I hope you will come up with your own color inspiration! Of course you can also use my colors. You can find the pattern for both hexies here! Don’t forget to show me your hexies on social media, using #inspirationalhexies, because I’d love to see them!

  • Thank you not only for the pattern links, but for the playlist! What a wonderful idea. I will seek out those tunes. The playlist reminded me that I have an Oceans CD of sounds of the ocean that I must dig out for additional inspiration. Thanks for sharing all this with us–it puts our crochet into a larger context and makes us feel we are a part of something much bigger. Through your blog, we learn about books, music, and other media while you help us choose our colors and our patterns and we make your wonderful creations.

    • Thanks for your kind words Judy 🙂 I’m happy to hear you appreciate it <3
