In my post about how the world could use some more crochet sweaters, I said that I would try to close the gap between crochet vs knitted sweaters. There are twice as much knitted sweaters than there are crocheted ones, so that gap is too big to fill all by myself. I need your help to do so!

Below you find all the basic information in one place for you to freely use.

You can find the whole sweater design series, broken down into 4 parts: / Je vindt hieronder de hele trui ontwerp serie, opgedeeld in vier delen:

Part 1: design, making a swatch and measuring gauge / Deel 1: ontwerp, een proeflapje maken en stekenverhouding opmeten

In this part we will discuss yarn and stitch options (yay, yarn shopping!!!), the general design and which decisions you need to take like working bottom-up or top-down.

Part 2: measurements and calculating stitch amounts / Deel 2: afmetingen en steken aantallen berekenen

When you know what stitch you want to use and what your gauge is, you need to decide what measurements you want your sweater to be and how many stitches you will need to achieve those measurements. I will also explain negative and positive ease.

Part. 3: general design and construction tips / Deel 3: algemene ontwerp en constructie tips

In this part I will share some general tips you can apply to your own design, such as how to get a shaped neckline etc. I also give several construction options for you to choose from.

Now that you have your own design and pattern finished, it needs to be ‘translated’ to different sizes for it to be a pattern that most of the crocheters can use. I will take you through this process and also give you calculations for yarn amounts for those different sizes. As a last step you also want to get your pattern tested, so I will give you some information about that too.

What have you learned after this series? / Wat heb je geleerd na deze serie?

After this series you will know all the general rules for how to design your own crochet sweater and how to write the pattern for different sizes. However, this is not a recipe for how to make a ‘standard’ crochet sweater. The key here, is to give you all the information you need to get started and let your creative brain roam free to come up with your own construction! Helen Shrimpton has made an excellent tutorial for how to make your own basic sweater, if you’d like to get started with that!
